Happy Fall! The weather is finally changing here and I am loving the crisp mornings. Aren’t you?
Now that cooler weather is officially upon us, I am getting geared up to test out some new comfort food recipes and get my house decorated for the fall season with lots of pumpkins! Do you want to know my little secret that I always turn to month after month for inspiration? It the Bible of all magazines: Southern Living.
Why I love Southern Living
I cannot remember not having the latest issues of Southern Living beautifully stacked on the coffee table so we could easily grab it to read while we curled up on the sofa. It was my own personal influencer before an influencer became a real business. If you grew up in the South then your mom or mother in law most likely sent you a subscription to once you got married. My mother in law did and still does!
Southern Living has been my go to magazine ever since I can remember. Did you get your October 2021 issue yet? I did! I could see it peeking out from underneath all the mail. I couldn’t wait to open it and see the the latest recipes. Literally, that is what I flipped to first… the scrumptious food! Everything looked so good, I had to sit down and create a list of what I was going to make.
The Southern Living Recipes I am Making
Superfast Shrimp with Honey Garlic Sauce
The 1st recipe that caught my eye was the photo on page 118, the mouth watering Superfast Shrimp with Honey Garlic Sauce. So I checked out the recipe… butter, garlic, honey, soy sauce, lemon, salt, shrimp, parsley, rice and brocolli…..check, check, check, going to make this one! Plus, I can make it gluten free with just a swap to some gluten free soy sauce. My boys will be so excited because we love some shrimp!
Seared Flank Steak with Zesty Herb Sauce
The 2nd recipe that caught my eye was the Seared Flank Steak with Zesty Herb Sauce on page 116. The photo looks gorgeous I love a good herb sauce. Plus, I know my kids will eat it and love this. This recipe is already gluten free, so there is no need to swap any ingredients. All I need for this is olive oil, flank steak, salt, pepper, parsley, cilantro, a shallot, red wine vinegar, a garlic clove and potatoes. Ok, anything with fresh cilantro is always amazing! This will be dinner tonight.
No Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies
The 3rd recipe I found looks like the bomb! It is a No Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies on page 120. Our family loves anything sweet, especially when you add peanut butter. This is a simple recipe as well, which is another reason I love the Southern Living Recipes. All I need: sugar, milk, butter, vanilla, oats, peanuts, peanut butter, and cocoa. Typing this is making me hungry already! I imagine once I make this, it will not last long and it is naturally gluten free.
The 2020 Southern Living Idea House
After I got my fix on recipes I checked out the 2021 Inspiration Home which was gorgeous! This year it is located in Louisville, Kentucky overlooking the Ohio River. It is on a flat yard with a carriage style driveway surrounded by these beautiful trees and white hydrangeas with lts of open sky pouring down on the Colonial Greek Revival home.
The home has a a cedar shake roof, dark shutters (that really open) and the siding, trim and columns are all white. The entrance is welcoming with its large covered entrance with a wide staircase leading up to it. The home is so inviting and I would love a chance to sneak up there with my mom and take a tour of it.
